Digitalization and Industry 4.0 have reached small and medium-sized businesses a long time ago and are a challenge in every corporate strategy. The goal is to identify innovative and even disruptive technologies and embed them in business innovation. Machines and objects are learning to articulate and communicate in their own digital language. The paradigm of information technology, namely real-time, becomes a solvable challenge. This is accompanied by an evolutionary, sometimes even radical change. How entities talk to their environment will become a new layer in the industrial economy. In addition to all the exciting technologies, the transformation will always be driven by people. In the future, this will require completely new approaches to the skilled labor market. In particular, the diverse skills of different generations need to be intelligently combined. Collaboration between industry and academia must also be reinvented if we are to realize the full potential of education and training in a competitive environment. With holistic approaches, digitalization will become the driving force behind many business-relevant innovations. These start with the sensor and end with new business models. There has never been a better time to start than now!
